The PINHOLE® Technique: A Revolutionary Treatment for Periodontitis

The PINHOLE® Technique: A Revolutionary Treatment for Periodontitis

Periodontitis, often also referred to as periodontal disease, is a gradual and serious gum disease. Many sufferers do not notice the symptoms until significant damage has already occurred. Gum recession and exposed tooth necks are not only aesthetically concerning but can also cause pain and tooth sensitivity, lead to bleeding gums, bad breath, or tooth loss. Additionally, the risk of cavities and infections increases. In advanced cases, the entire body can be affected. The good news is: With the innovative Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST™), I offer you a gentle and effective solution at my practice.

The Problem: Gum Recession and Its Consequences

Gum recession is more than just an aesthetic issue. When the gums recede, the sensitive tooth necks become exposed. This leads to:

  • Tooth sensitivity: Especially with hot or cold foods and beverages.

  • Increased cavity risk: Exposed tooth necks are more susceptible to decay.

  • Inflammation and infections: The defense against bacteria is weakened.

  • Aesthetic impairment: Uneven gums can affect self-confidence.

Goodbye to Painful Periodontitis Treatments
The traditional methods for treating gum recession were often invasive and painful. Tissue grafts, where tissue was taken from other areas of the mouth and sutured onto the exposed tooth necks, frequently resulted in a long healing period and considerable discomfort. Treatment with antibiotics often only leads to short- or medium-term improvement, but the periodontitis returns -- and at the same time, the important balance of the oral microbiome, which is a fundamental prerequisite for your dental health, is permanently disrupted.

The Solution: Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST™)
For many years, I searched for a treatment that is less invasive while achieving real results. In my practice in Vienna, I therefore offer you a revolutionary and minimally invasive alternative to traditional gum grafting: the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique. This method was developed by Dr. John Chao in California, and I am proud that I was trained on-site in the USA and am thus the only dentist in Austria authorized to offer this technique.

How does the Pinhole technique work?
The Pinhole technique is a minimally invasive method that requires no cutting or suturing. Here is how it works:

Step 1: Small hole: A tiny hole is made in the gum with a needle, which is barely noticeable.
Step 2: Loosen and reposition tissue: Through this hole, the gum tissue is gently loosened with special instruments and moved into the desired position.
Step 3: Insert collagen: Collagen migrates into the treated area, supports healing, and helps stabilize the gums. The collagen and PRF membranes derived from the patient's own blood serve to ideally shift the gum tissue back to its original position and hold it in place.

This method is not only less painful but also offers faster healing and immediate aesthetic improvements.

Advantages of the Pinhole Technique

  • Minimally invasive: No incisions, no sutures.
  • Fast healing: Shorter recovery time compared to conventional methods.
  • Less pain: Fewer postoperative complaints.
  • Immediate results: Improvement of gums and smile immediately after treatment.
  • Efficiency: Multiple teeth can be treated in a single session.

How does the Pinhole method work for gum recession?
The Pinhole technique is a minimally invasive treatment that counteracts gum recession. It can be used to treat smaller areas of gum recession or to prepare the gums for a tissue graft.

With the Pinhole technique, a small hole is made in the gum using a needle. Through this hole, special instruments are used to loosen and reposition the gum tissue. This allows collagen to "migrate" into the area and close the gap.

If you are suffering from gum recession, please call our practice today to schedule an appointment at my office. We will then determine whether this treatment is suitable for you or what alternatives are available.

How long does the treatment take?
The treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that can address moderate to severe gum recession. The goal of the procedure is to loosen the tissue around the tooth neck so that it can be moved back over the exposed root surfaces. This covers the roots and protects them from further damage.

In most cases, it is possible to stop the progression of gum recession and restore the gum line to its original position. The procedure is relatively quick and simple and can be completed in a single session. This makes the Pinhole technique an effective way to treat gum recession and prevent further damage to your teeth and gums.

A treatment unique in all of Austria at the practice of Dr. Roberto Lhotka
Gum recession can be a frightening experience. On one hand, the aesthetics of exposed tooth necks can make you feel self-conscious, and on the other hand, exposed tooth necks also present a medical problem that should not be ignored.

Gum recession is a common dental problem that can cause sensitivity, pain, and an increased risk of cavities and infections. In the past, the only treatment option was a gum graft: a painful and invasive procedure.

The Pinhole treatment was developed by Dr. John Chao in California, USA. In order to offer you this innovative treatment option at my dental practice in Vienna, I trained with Dr. John Chao in the Pinhole Surgical Technique.
